    Types of Editing

    It is a good idea to have an editing professional review your book before you release it to the public (not just your cousin Jane who got straight A's in high school English!)  Be sure you know what type of editing you are buying!


    Content editing is where your editor reviews the content of your book and makes substantive suggestions about tone, plot, structure etc.  This is the most expensive type of editing.

    Copy editing (sometimes called Mechanical Editing) is simply reviewing your manuscript for grammar, punctuation, consistency, etc.  Often an editor uses a "rule book" for editing like the Chicago Manual of Style.  Fees for copy editing are usually by the word or page.

    Page Design Formatting

    Today most books are "printed on demand".  That is, your book will not be printed until the retailer or distributor actually has a paid order in hand. 

    Books are printed digitally (think souped up copier machine).  As such, there are very specific page design format requirements so that your book easily fits into the workflow and prints correctly.  Remember, the retailer or distributor is printing one copy of your book, then a copy of another book, then a different book and so on.

    Make sure your page designer is fully aware of the requirements (trim size, gutter, embedded fonts, and so on.)  You want your book to be accepted by the distributor as well as look nice each time.

      Front Matter Matters


      Make sure your book has Front Matter. Front matter includes all content that appears prior to chapter one or the main body text.   
      Front matter elements usually appear in this order:

      1. Half title
      2. Title
      3. Copyright
      4. Reviews and praise
      5. Dedication
      6. Table of contents
      7. Preface
      8. Acknowledgments
      9. Prologue
      10. Introduction

      There are universally accepted formatting standards for front matter.  Certain pages fall on a right facing page and others on a left facing page.
      Employing a professional page designer to make sure this is done correctly is generally a good idea.

      RETAILERS MAKE THE MOST MONEY WHEN YOUR BOOK IS SOLD!

The expected wholesale discount can vary depending on several factors, including the type of retailer, the book's format (e.g., hardcover, paperback), and the anticipated sales volume. However, there are some general guidelines and industry standards that publishers and retailers often follow:

        1. Standard Discount Range: The standard wholesale discount for most trade books (i.e., books sold to general consumers) typically falls within the range of 40% to 55% off the retail price. This means that retailers expect to purchase books from publishers or wholesalers at a discount of 40% to 55% of the book's recommended retail price (RRP).  Amazon will generally require a 55% discount.

        2. Consignment and Sale or Return: In some cases, retailers may request consignment terms or sale-or-return agreements, where they only pay for books after they are sold to consumers. In these arrangements, the wholesale discount may be higher to compensate for the additional risk to the publisher.


        If your book retails for $10, this is likely how the money will be split:

        • You get from the Retailer $4.50 (55% discount from retailer). If sold for $10.00 the retailer makes $5.50
        • Minus Cost to Print on Demand (see previous tip for more info on POD) $3.00. 
        • $1.50 to the author/publisher
